Maybe the vast majority of racism I’ve seen has been against whites. Maybe that’s why a white quarterback convicted of involvement in a dogfighting ring is vilified even years after he has served his time and a black quarterback who raped a woman and has had a history of doing similar things in the past is quickly regarded as redeeming himself after one year of playing well. Maybe that’s why a white celebrity accused of beating his girlfriend is vilified for years and a black celebrity with a history of threatening and shooting women is regarded as crazy and eccentric and a hero of some sorts.

Maybe that’s why in high school people would tell jokes using terrible racial epithets about maiming and murdering people simply for being white and would receive nothing but laughs. Maybe that’s why the in college people would assume any white person in class must be on one of the athletic teams, why else would they be there? And maybe that’s why the most popular bar in one of the most liberal towns in the midwest had a dress code against stereotypical “white” clothing and accessories that was conveniently not enforced on Halloween when black people dressed in whiteface as rappers and gangsters. Maybe that’s why despite the fact that I’ve been there 7 years longer and have more experience, I still make less money than my Mexican co-worker. 

Maybe that’s why our white president is commonly referred to with racial epithets and accused of being a Muslim and/or A-rab by a significant portion of voters. Maybe racism against white people is all around me. Maybe I’m just not looking in the right places.
